Some Nigerian celebrity couples have proven that wide age difference has got nothing to do with making a success of one’s marriage
The usual belief in some quarters is that for one to make a success out of one’s marriage, you need to be married to a spouse that is closer to you in age. The premise is that this will make you share common interests and values that are necessary to grow the bond of marriage.
But some celebrities in Nigeria and Abroad have proven that this belief is not totally true of all marriages. These celebrity couples have despite their wide age differences stayed together in their marriages for decades with both flourishing in their various careers.
Even those that have just tied the bond, are proving that their marriages are solid and fun, in spite of the age differences between them least from their posts and tweets on social media.
These celebrities are from different Nigerian backgrounds: social, careers, religious and tribal.
We present to you 10 of these celebrity couples that are Nigerians.
- Muhammadu and Aisha Buhari:
Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, married the First Lady, former Aisha Halilu, on 2 December 1989, when she was 18 years old and the retired General was aged 47 years. The age difference is 29 years. Muhammadu had five children from a previous marriage to Safinatu Yusuf.
Since 1989, the couple has had five children together.
Aisha, a Cosmologist and Beauty Therapist holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration, a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Strategic Studies, a Diploma in Beauty Therapy and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Cosmetology and Beauty. Most of her career training was done after the marriage.
- Rear Admiral Allison Amaechina and Diezani Madueke
55-year-old Allison Madueke was a retired Chief of Naval Staff and former Military Governor and a widower when he married Diezani Agama, an Executive in Shell Petroleum in 1999. Their age difference is 16 years. The couple has a son together.
Diezani, after the marriage, rose to be a director in the Oil major, Nigeria’s former Minister of Transportation, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, and Minister for Petroleum Resources.
- Theophilus Yakubu and Daisy Danjuma
- General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (retired) born in 1938 got married to Daisy Ehinare, who was born on August 6, 1952 in early 2000s. Their age difference is 14 years.
Both got married after their failed marriages. Danjuma, a former Chief of Army Staff was also a former Minister of Defence has made more wealth in shipping, oil and gas, banking and other sectors since retiring from the Nigerian Army.
On the other hand, Daisy continues to dazzle in the corporate world, politics and philanthropic activities. And the two never fail to radiate love whenever they appear together in public. The marriage is blessed with a child.

In 1989, Olu Jacobs, born on 11 July 1942 got married to Joke Silva, who was born on 29 September 1961, after a meeting in 1981 at the National Theatre, Lagos at which Olu told Joke point blank that she is his wife. The age difference between the two is 19 years.
The two theatre gurus have three children but sadly lost one a few years ago, during a stage performance of their yearly Yuletide play.
Joke Silva, MFR, is a strong believer in women empowerment and a philanthropist who runs the Lufodo Group with her husband. The group includes an Academy of Performing Arts, a Productions company, a Consultancy and a film distribution company.

The billionaire industrialist and Aare of Lagos got married to Shade in 1999 when he was 59 years and Shade, 22 years. Their age difference is 37 years.
The marriage produced four children. Over the years, Shade has made her husband feel younger at heart, changing his fashion sense and style which she gradually takes over the running of the business relieving the old man of more stress in running the vast business empire. She is the MD/CEO of Eleganza Group, founded by her husband.

Nollywood star actress Omotola Ekeinde and her beau, Captain Matthew Ekeinde, was a dashing 28-year-old pilot when he got married to 18-year-old Omotola on the 23rd of March 1996. Their age difference is 10 years.
The big age difference has not stopped the romance and marriage from blossoming with both of them making good of their careers. Omotola went on to become one of the most acclaimed actors in Africa, while Mathew went from being a pilot in the Presidential fleet to become a Captain of a commercial airline.

When Nigerian billionaire and businessman Chief Emmanuel Iwuanywu decided to re-marry two years after losing his wife, Eudora, to cancer, he chose a 26-year-old lady, Frances Enwerem. He was 74-year-old old at the time of marriage.
Even though, there were allegations that his grown-up children opposed the marriage he still went ahead to consummate the marriage, which is now blessed with children.

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomole is married to Iara Fortes, a Cape Verdean model, who is 40 years younger than him.
