The dramatic and ‘successful’ debut of Nigeria in international Bobsled and Skeleton competitions at the last Winter Olympics Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea is attracting many young athletes into the sports.
This has put the Bobsled and Skeleton Federation of Nigeria (BSFN) on its toes as it strives to make the sports more popular and its teams successful in international competitions. The Federation, in September organized an elaborate Olympics Trials at the National Stadium, Lagos, where 10 athletes were selected to represent Nigeria at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Games.
Also, seven athletes are set for the World junior Championship in Austria in January 2022, with the team leaving well ahead of the competition to acclimatize.
Solomon Ogba, the Federation President, said the junior athletes are being specially trained to excl in the World junior championship and for the future challenges.
“We have to prepare the young athletes well ahead of the future challenge,” Ogba said. “The World Junior Championship in Austria will be a stepping stone for many young athletes across the globe, and we want our stars to gain from it,”Ogba said.
Also, some Nigerian athletes have entered for various competitions in the United States to boost their chances of qualifying for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Games.
