Justice Odili retires from Supreme Court at 70

Justice Mary Odili of the Supreme Court is retiring from the nation’s Judiciary today, Thursday, May 12, 2022, as she clocked the 70 years mandatory retirement age

A Valedictory session in her honour is to be presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad, at the main courtroom of the Supreme Court today.

Odili’s retirement will further deplete the number of justices on the apex court to 16, just as another of her colleague, Justice Ejembi Eko, will also bow out next Monday.

Odil, who was born on May 12, 1952, at AmudiObizi, Ezinihitte, in Mbaise L.G.A. of Imo State, was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court on June 23, 2011.

She attended St Benedict’s Primary School, Obizi Ezinihitte, Imo State; St Michael’s Primary School, Umuahia, Abia State; St Agnes Primary School, Maryland, Lagos and Our Lady of Apostles Primary School, Yaba, Lagos between 1959 and 1965.

She attended Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Yaba, Lagos; Owerri Girls Secondary School, Owerri, Imo;  Mbaise Girls Secondary School, Mbaise, Imo; and the Queen of the Rosary College, Onitsha, Anambra between 1965 and 1972.

Odili read Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B (Hons)) in 1976. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1977.

She did her one-year NYSC as Pupil State Counsel, Ministry of Justice, Abeokuta, Ogun State from 1977 to 1978 and became a Pupil State Counsel, Ministry of Justice of old Bendel State in 1978.  She was made a Magistrate Grade III, in the old Bendel State from 1978 to 1979 acting as Chairman, Juvenile Court, Benin, Bendel State.

She became a Magistrate Grade II, in Rivers State from 1979 to 1981 acting as Chairman, Juvenile Court, Rivers State. She was a Magistrate Grade I and Chief Magistrate Grade I from 1981 to 1992.

She was made a Judge of the High Court of Rivers State in 1992 and a Justice of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Judicial Division in 2004 and Presiding Justice, Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division in 2011 and acted so until her elevation to the Supreme Court in 2012.

Justice Odili was later conferred with National Honour Commander Federal Republic, CFR.

She is married to Dr Peter Odili, a former Governor of Rivers State.
