Afrobeat star, Femi Kuti and his son, Omorinmade, put up a father–son electrifying performance at the New Afrika Shrine, Ikeja, Lagos, as family members, fans and other well-wishers converged to celebrate the duo on their Grammy joint nominations.

Tagged ‘Father& Son – The Experience’, the show started with a performance by a singer called Olusegun and his band, after which Made, took the stage for his first set. After his opening performance, the singer rendered a song in honour of the late student of Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto, Deborah Samuel, who was lynched for alleged blasphemy.

Made then rendered ‘Free your Mind’, from his album, ‘Foreword’. He was joined on stage by his girlfriend, Inedoye Onyenso, actress and scriptwriter, who danced enthusiastically with him.

A major highlight of the event was when family members presented an expensive Selmer saxophone to Femi Kuti on stage for his 60th birthday celebration

Yeni, Femi’s elder sister, who presented the gift to her brother on behalf of the family, explained the saxophone was bought from donations from family members while the manufacturer of the saxophone, Selmer, sold the saxophone to the family at half the price.

A delighted Femi, on receiving the gift, expressed surprise that Selmer agreed to sell the Sax at a discount.

“Selmer paid some of the money for my sax? Selmer? Every time I go and meet Selmer, they will be looking at me, like what have you played? The best saxophone company put (contributed) money for my sax!

“Honestly, I am not too shocked but as Selmer put money in, I am amazingly shocked. I am feeling foolishly foolish,” he said.
