Nigeria’s Burna Boy has won the Best Global Music Album category at the 63rd Grammy Awards with his Twice As Tall album. On a night Wizkid also won the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl, from Lion King: The Gift album.
Burna Boy, the singer-songwriter, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, won at his second nomination for the global music awards having lost last year.
At the award held inside the Los Angeles Convention Center, USA without an audience and performers separated onto five stages, arranged in a circle to maintain social distancing, Burna Boy’s 2020 album was nominated alongside Antibalas (FU Chronicles), Bebel Gilberto (Agora), Anoushka Shankar (Love Letters), and Tinariwen (Amadjar).
With the win, Burna Boy is the first recipient of the newly re-named Best Global Music Album category, which was formerly Best World Music Album, a change meant to reflect a more inclusive music industry.
The Afrobeat artiste also performed at Award Pre-show event, where he performed a medley of songs including “Ye,” from his 2018 album and “Level Up” and “Onyeka,” his newer tracks.
The performance ended with “Ye” in a room filled with fog and mirrored screens.
Nigeria’s Wizkid also won the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl, from Lion King: The Gift album.The Best Music Video award is given to the artist, video director and video producer.
The 63rd GRAMMY Awards recognize recordings released between Sept. 1, 2019, and Aug. 31, 2020.
