Single-engine aircraft crashes into Lagos neighbourhood

A light single engine turbo aircraft, on Tuesday crashed on the busy Oba Akran Avenue in the Ikeja area of Lagos State and burst into flames.
The J4 30 aircraft type with piston engine turbo, registered 5N-CCQ had only the pilot and a passenger onboard when it crashed landed at about 1:41pm at a building adjacent AP Filling Station, and United Bank for Africa, on Oba Akran Avenue in Ikeja.
The two occupants were successfully rescued from the scene.
The incident caused some pandemonium as motorists and other commuters had to scamper for safety resulting in traffic gridlock at the major and adjourning roads.
The aircraft believed to be operated by Air First Hospital and Tour was said to be coming in for an emergency landing when it hit a light pole after making the circuit and crashed from 1500 feet from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).
Benjamin Hundeyin, Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, who confirmed the incident, in a tweet, said the situation had been brought under control and CP Idowu Owohunwa, the Commissioner of the Command, had visited the scene where the crash occurred.
He said the pilot and co-pilot have been evacuated to a medical facility.
“Situation is under control as evacuation is almost complete, while emergency operatives from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are already at the site of the crash,” he tweeted.
