The Lagos Police has charged Eddy Ebube, popularly known as Bebex, to court on counts of assault following his celebrated encounter with a married woman, Omolara James.
Ebube, 37-years-old, was arraigned at a Lagos Magistrate’s court sitting in Ogba, alongside one of his employees, 27-year-old Ali Musa, on three counts before the Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Odubayo.
C, Olagbayi, the Police Prosecutor, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on April 20, 2023, at Mercedes Benz Line, Ladipo Market, Mushin, Lagos.
“That you, Ebube Eddy and Ali Musa, on April 20 around 8pm at Mercedes Benz Line, Ladipo Market, Mushin Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony wit: conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and assault and thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 411 of the criminal law of Lagos State, 2015.
“That you, Ebube Eddy, on the same day, time and place at the aforesaid magisterial district did conduct yourself in a manner to cause a breach of peace by making moves to indecently assault one Omolara James, 26, by wanting to touch her breast and thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 168(d) of the Lagos Criminal Law, 2015.
“That you, Ali Musa, on the same day, time and place at the aforesaid magisterial district did assault one Omolara James by slapping her on her face thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 170 and punishable under Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The two accused were granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties but were ordered to be remanded in a correctional centre pending when they will meet their bail conditions.
Consequently, they were remanded at Nigeria Correctional Service, Kirikiri till the next adjournment date on May 15, 2023.
Bebex, who specializes in upgrading Mercedes Benz in Ladipo, Mushin area of Lagos was accused of ordering his employees to slap James for refusing him to touch her breast.
The case became a high-profile one following an appeal made by James in a viral video relating her encounter in the hands of Bebex and his employees. James later made another video claiming the first one was made in anger.
However, stories later emerged that she was intimidated by policemen at Olosan Police Station where she has gone to report the incident to recant her accusation.
This led to the intervention of Idowu Owohunwa, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, who after a thorough investigation ordered that he should be prosecuted and be arraigned in court.
Owohunwa also ordered the removal of the Mushin Divisional Police Officer for shoddy supervision of his subordinates that handled the case.
